Enjoy a wonderful dinner at the Château's own restaurant which is set within an attractive dining room overlooking the gardens. The Villa Mathilde has its own dining room and an attractive sun terrace where you can dine alfresco during the Summer.

The Château is set in attractive parkland grounds, perfect for outdoor activities. If you're a keen golfer there are no less than six golf courses to choose from, the nearest being just a twenty minutes drive. For more information, please visit our Golf section.

The Château du Baffy was originally a Mill, powered by the diverted Seulles River and the focal building on the Château’s estate. The Château itself was built East of the Mill around 1735, with extensions occurring in the late Eighteenth Century and early Nineteenth Century. Although the Mill was torn down in 1840 due to tax infringements its remains are still visible providing an eerie contrast against the beautiful Château and a reminder of the class separation that existed in the France of the 1700’s.

The Château’s owners during the Second World War were the Vignerol family. The Comtesse Vignerol, her husband, two children, her father, servants and a governess were all resident and refused to depart when the Germans chose to use the fine manor house as a headquarters. The Comtesse left a diary which gives a deeper insight into the Château’s turbulent history.

A slit trench, 15 by 1 ½ feet existed in the grounds to provide some sort of shelter on the very heavy bombing raids that occurred at 04.00hrs on June 6th, which unbeknownst to them was in preparation for their liberation. There were two German gunmen positioned very near to the Château, one 150 yards away, the other 500 yards. The gun fire from the guns terrorised both the owners and nearby villagers. By 13:15hrs on June 6th, the Allied troops arrived at Colombiers-sur-Seulles and shooting intensified. Anne Vignerol records that by the end of the month:

‘All the fields [were] full of troops – not a blade of grass to be seen, not an empty corner, as thousands and thousands more troops and vehicles are landed.’

Historical

History (with a capital H) has embraced Chissay over the centuries. Situated between Montrichard and Chenonceaux, this former fortified castle was built under Charles the 7th for Pierre Bérard, chancellor of France and husband to Anne de Rondard. Charles the 7th and Louis the 11th both stayed here, as evidenced by many royal acts.

On the 19th of April 1543 Bérard sold the estate to Philibert Babou, Lord of Bourdaisière, the king's treasurer and superintendent of finance, for £16 690. The castle remained in the family, then passed into the hands of Duke of Choiseul until the eve of the revolution. Choiseul ceded Chissay to his friend Jean-Baptiste du Buc, a man of merit and good fortune who grew to know well the revolution's prisons.

On his death in 1795 Chissay became the property of Marie-Jacques Gaigneron, Count of Marolles, allied through his mother to Empress Josephine. Gaigneron remained the owner of Chissay and was also the town mayor for more than half a century.   The castle has known varying fortunes, and the original architecture has been added to by its various owners.

Acquired in the twentieth century by Baron and Baroness of Gartempe, then passed to their descendants the Costa de Beauregard, it was this family that welcomed Mr Paul Raynaud in June 1940. The Prime Minister established his headquarters here, and political and military conferences were held in the main salon. Chissay castle received General Weygand, the ambassador of Great Britain, ministers and dignitaries who liaised with the republic's president residing 30km away in Cangé castle. On the 12th of June, General de Gaulle arrived at Chissay to present Paul Reynaud with his 'reduit breton' plan (a joint British/French strategy to defend the Brittany peninsula against the Germans.) Chissay witnessed the agony of the 3rd republic, the future of France was determined behind the thick walls of the castle.

A BRIEF PAGE OF LOCAL HISTORY

The chateau of Audrieu, as you see it today, dates from the beginning of the 18th century, but its history goes back in fact to the time of William the Conqueror.

According to legend, the Lord of Percy, first ruler of these lands, was in fact the personal chef of the Conqueror.
(Birth and tradition call upon us to be worthy, nine centuries later, of these royal origins)

At Hastings, it is said, he felled a few Saxons with a colender spoon (chinois or conical strainers were apparently unknown at the time) and for this signal feat of arms, he was dubbed a baron.

Our search has not enabled us to discover whether once a baron, William the Conqueror sent him back to his pots and pans, or gave him distinctly less worthy tasks like skewering Saxons, or pouring pitch on the Bretons...
