E7.  CHATEAU D’ARTIGNY
37250 Montbazon, Centre – Val-de-Loire
Tel:  33 0 2 47 34 30 30; Fax:  33 0 2 47 34 30 39

From their Website: The white stones of the majestic Artigny Castle, the dream Belle Époque castle of François Coty, the famous perfumer, may be seen from a distance as they rise above the Indre Valley. Twenty-five hectares of park containing a French garden, marble statues, woodwork and trompe l'oeil frescos. No expense was spared in the creation of this beautiful residence, now an elegant castle hotel located south of Tours.

The Château d'Artigny has 65 rooms of 5 different categories, from the most elegant apartment to the most delightful room including junior suites, "Deluxe", "Superior" and "Traditional" rooms, located in the Château or just opposite in the Pavillon d'Ariane and the Cité des Parfums or even on the edge of the park at the Pavillon du Garde.  All the rooms are elegantly decorated in keeping with their location and enjoy modern comforts. They offer pleasant views over the Indre and its valley, the French garden, the Château or the park.

Located at 800 meters from Château d'Artigny, Moulin d'Artigny is situated in the middle of a 2 hectare (5 acre) poplar grove. Le Moulin d'Artigny proposes 7 rooms country style furnished. Ideal for hiking and biking

The Château d'Artigny down the centuries

The first château was built on the hill (the Puy) during the Hundred Years' War as part of the defences built along the Indre River around the keep at Montbazon.

As the centuries passed and following a series of restorations, it became a hybrid edifice, with neo-Gothic towers and pseudo Renaissance wings around the old manor house, which François Coty, the inventor of the modern perfume industry and its new owner, did not like. He demolished it in 1912, building in its place a sumptuous château in pure 18th century style, an almost perfect copy of the château de Champlâtreux in the Val d'Oise.

Coty, whose real name was Spoturno, was incredibly demanding; he wanted to rival the builders in the age of Louis XIV: the Perfume Emperor was going to compete with the Kings of France.

The chapel at the entrance to the château was to be an exact copy of the one in Versailles but a quarter of the size. The installations were grandiose: washbasins were in marble and the kitchen sinks in copper, the floors were in multicoloured marble, the woodwork was carved from the block and the capitals of the columns were decorated with ivy leaves, acanthus, laurel, etc. The kitchen was in white marble, the pastry room in pink and green marble and the linen room on two floors had 140 cupboards in citron wood or Macassar ebony inlaid with mother of pearl...
The work began in 1912 and finished in 1929. However, François Coty did not live there very long since he died in 1934.

On his death, the château was sequestered by his many creditors. During the Second World War, it was occupied in succession by the general staff of the Ministry of the Navy, German troops until 1942, and it was an annex of the Tours Hospital until 1946. Christiane Coty, the perfumer's daughter, inherited it in 1947.

In 1959, René Traversac, the founder of the Grandes Etapes Françaises, owned just one establishment: the Prieuré close to Saumur. However, he had developed a liking for the hotel business and was looking for another establishment to acquire.
The Château d'Artigny, overlooking the valley of the Indre, had just been put on the market by Christiane Coty, the daughter of the famous perfumer who had built and owned the property.
He was able to visit the majestic house and appreciate its beauty, but the size and magnificence of the château, not to mention the transformation work need to turn it into a hotel and decorate it somewhat dampened his enthusiasm. He gave himself a few weeks to think about it, at the end of which he finally took the risk of buying it.

A marvellous adventure then began, which was to lead him a few years later to become the head of the burgeoning chain of the " Châteaux-Hotels de France" : "A dapting a few of our old castles to suit modern tastes in comfort while respecting their historical character is the mission that the Association of Châteaux-Hotels de France has set itself".

In 1975, René Traversac played an active part in merging this chain with the "Relais de Campagne" chain and the "Relais et Châteaux" was born.
The Château d'Artigny, converted into a luxury hotel (thanks to the talent of the decorator, Pierre Scapula, and others), opened its doors on 27 March 1961.

Around 1789, the Colonel Salis Samade gives this property to his nephew, the Baron Henri de Triqueti. Starting as a student of Girodet, Triqueti became the “prince sculptor”. He has been given the task of making the brass doors of the Madeleine’s church of Paris.

Close to the King’s family; around 1838 Triqueti gave Vaugouard to the Duc d’Orléans, oldest son of the king Louis Philippe 1st, to make a famous hunting rendez-vous.

E11.  Château d'Arpaillargues - Rue du Château
30700 Arpaillargues –
Tel.: +33 (0)4 66 22 14 48; Fax: 33 0 4 66 22 56 10

From their Website: On the outskirts of a village 4 kilometers west of Uzès, stands d'Arpaillargues castle, a beautiful 18th century residence that has been transformed into the Hotel d'Agoult. Thick walls conceal the charm and gentility of the 17th and 18th Century architecture of this stately home, nestled in the depths of Provence.

A historic castle, Arpaillargues has always been linked to the Arts. Frank Listz's muse, Marie de Flavigny (the Comtesse d'Agoult) once lived here, and their daughter Cosima went on to be Richard Wagner's second wife. Today, restored and rejuvenated, Arpaillargues castle is not only a memorial, but an elegant and discreet estate in the heart of the Uzège countryside.
Historical

On the outskirts of a village 4 kilometers west of Uzès, d'Arpaillargues castle is a beautiful 18th century residence, now transformed into the Hotel d'Agoult. It once belonged to a family made famous by Listz's great love, Marie de Flavigny, , who resided here.

In the 15th Century the Lords of the estate were the Bertha who were originally from Velay, then through marriage, the Ginestoux family. In 1559 the Bargetons acquired the castle, and it was passed on to the D'Agoult family in 1647 on the marriage  of Mondette de Bargeton with Charles D'Agoult of Piégnon.

Their granddaughter Françoise received Arpaillargues in her dowry on her marriage to Jean de Barjac de Rochegude, a Protestant, who then went into exile in Switzerland.  Arpaillargues was returned to Argoult by the Nîmes tribunal after the French Wars of Religion in 1723.

In 1735 Charles d’Agoult of Montmaur abandoned his castle in Dauphiné to move to Arpaillargues. According to a recovered inventory, it was an uncomfortable dwelling so Marquis Henri François d’Agoult, a former naval lieutenant, began immense reconstruction work, despite his considerable financial difficulties.

Charles d'Agoult, husband of Marie de Flavigny, was born in the castle in 1790. He sold the castle to a former trader, Gabriel Puget. In 1907, it was owned by the Huguet family. It was in a state of dilapidation and the garden leased to a farm when it was bought by Messrs. Hambury and Schootemeyer in 1964.  Then in 1973 it was bought and converted into a hotel by the Savry family.

More so than for its for history, the Arpaillargues castle is interesting due to its literary references. In a great scandal of its time, Choderlos de Laclos claimed to be inspired by the Marquise d'Agoult de Montmaur to portray Madame de Merteuil in "Les liaisons Dangereuses". In "Les illusions perdues", Balzac borrowed characters from the Bargeton family. Finally, contemporary writer François Nourrissier (« Le Maître de Maison ») lived in the castle for several years.

E12.  Domaine Saint Clair - Le Donjon***
chemin St-Clair
76790 Etretat, Normandie
Tel: (+33) 0 2 35 27 08 23; Fax: 33 0 2 35 27 08 23

From their Website: The 3-star rated hotel and restaurant Domaine Saint Clair Le Donjon is situated in Etretat, Seine Maritime. "Le Donjon" is a small 19th Century Anglo-Norman Château and the Villa is a cosy seaside residence dating back from La Bele Epoque.

Nestled in a leafy quiet tree lined estate, the hotel boasts a magnificent panoramic view. A new hotel concept where you'll like to linger, will introduce you to the spirit of this distinctive residence where twenty one rooms reflect the soul and personality of their hosts: cloth, draperies, colours, objects, ambiences, music, scents.
This place where several famous people have lived, has unique stories to tell. Delve into the story and enjoy a singular hotel experience at Domaine Saint Clair Le Donjon.
Hotel
The domain comprises 21 rooms spread between the Dungeon and the Villa. These rooms, all equipped with a bathroom with balneo  therapy bath, mingle charm and refinement, mellow lighting, harmony of tone, grand comfort and an unbeatable view of the sea or the park
Each of these rooms, dedicated to a personality from Maupassant to Flaubert, from Loti to Proust, possesses its own atmosphere, now cosy, now flashy, now filtered now impish, it’s up to you to choose the character that reflects you the best!
For a very original version stay in a setting worthy of the great novels of the 19th century.  It was the end of the 19th century.  Etretat and its surrounds were the holiday resorts of artists and writers, beginning with Maurice Leblanc, the father-creator of Arsène Lupin.  It is this atmosphere of the ‘Belle Epoque’, in which refinement, elegance and the art of  living were a requisite that you find at the Domain St Clair.
Composed of a castle, - the Dungeon, built in 1862 and of a delightful villa constructed in 1889, our Domaine never stops reliving its glory days, in the spirit of Anglo-Norman castles of the 19th century.  Imaginary or real characters, one of whom is Camille de Saint Phalle, the lady of the manor, and a personal history that is a shade romantic, accompany you during your stay.

In effect, our rooms bear the names and the traces of the passage of around twenty people such as Pierre Loti, Marcel Proust, Claude Monet, Jacques Offenbach, Guy de Maupassant, Gustave Flaubert, but also those of a doctor, of a retired Major, of an actress, of a dandy and even of a young women with just a touch of frivolity and of Polish origin.

A universe outside time, worthy of a novel that allows to break away from our daily life and the stress of  large towns.  At home with us, you’ll live to another rhythm, that of an epoch when people knew how to take their time.

From their Website: Château de Saint-Loup is a gem of french architecture and a landmark of the history of Poitou.  The ongoing renovation of both House and Gardens is in the hands of the best french specialists: historians, architects, landscapists, botanists,…

The restoration of the gardens of Château de Saint-Loup was awarded the title of European leader project by the European Commission in 1993.  The Gouffiers, builders of the 17 th c. Château were a family of great art collectors, and have passed on to Saint-Loup their sense of taste and spirit of excellence that still lives on.

The present owner is Count Charles-Henri de Bartillat, The lords of the château.

The site of Saint-Loup enjoys a strategic position at the meeting point between the Thouet and Cebron rivers and the plain of Poitou and Gâtine. Thus a military stronghold was built there as soon as in the XI th century (Drogon, first Lord to be known).

The Archives are one of the House “treasures”. They give a lot of information on the life and structure of the Château and Gardens from the Renaissance to the Revolution and enable a scientific approach to all restorations.

Garden and Parklands - Nestled within 10 acres of terraced Provencal parkland and surrounded by mature cypress trees and old olive groves, the hotel offers mesmerising views across the Mougins valley to the Pre-Alps.

Originally, Le Mas Candille was an 18th century Provençal farmhouse, surrounded by mature cypress trees ( subsequently enriched with more than 200 different mediteranean plants ) and set within a terraced landscape of former olive groves. Most of the old olive trees remain as a reminder of past times.

During the French Revolution the farm took the name of "Candille", or "Candillou" - the provencal word for "candle" - after its largest cypress tree, there are a myriad of secluded hideaways in which to contemplate, converse or while away the day.
